Curriculum Key Stages 3 and 4:

The school is well equipped to deliver a wide range of subjects. In the first three years (KS3) pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum in line with the Northern Ireland requirements. On entry to the school pupils are grouped into broad bands and their needs are supported through strong pastoral care and special needs programmes. Progress is continuously monitored to help ensure that each pupil develops his/her full potential.

The House System and Positive Reward programmes help ensure that pupil achievement is recognised. Pupils are taught in class sizes appropriate to their needs.

Pupils in Key Stage 4 are grouped into classes according to their subject choices and career pathways. Courses currently on offer include Art and Design, Business Studies, Business and Communication Systems, Child Development, English, English Literature, Essential Skills, Employment Skills, French, Geography, History, Home Economics, Information Communication Technology, Learning for Life and Work, Mathematics, Media Studies, Music, Occupational Studies, Personal Money Management, Prince’s Trust Award, Physical Education, Religious Education, Science and Technology and Design.

A group of pupils also participate in a ‘School to Work’ scheme whereby one day per week is spent in a workplace setting. Some of the Occupational Studies units are currently delivered at the South West College Skills Centre.

Curriculum Post 16:
Following GCSE examinations pupils have the opportunity to return to school for further study. Current provision includes Level 3 Courses in Business (Double and Single Award), Health and Social Care (Double and Single Award), Art and Design, Construction, Engineering, French, Home Economics, Hospitality, ICT, Mathematics, Media Studies, Music, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Psychology, Religious Education, Science, Sport and Technology and Design.

Other courses include BTEC Level 2 Diploma courses in Construction and Hospitality, a Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (COPE), Millennium Volunteer and International Awards and the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Some courses are delivered in conjunction with other educational establishments. A well equipped study centre and supervised study periods encourage and promote independent study.

The school is committed to the FLC’s vision of providing equality of opportunity for achievement and progression which will reflect the needs of the community and the local and regional economy.
