E- District success

Saturday February 4, 2012

Two teams of Devenish College athletes recently competed in the annual E-district cross country competition at Dungannon park. This event is open to all schools in Fermanagh, Donegal, Cavan and Tyrone. Although the weather was cold and dry, conditions underfoot where mucky and difficult.

The boys intermediate team of Aaron Somerville, Kyle Ogle, Ryan Dunlop, Nathan Bell, Nathan Wylie and Craig Johnston were in confident form; however the 4500 metre course and large field of runners was a big step up from county level. The race began at a blistering pace with the long hill section splitting up the field. After the first lap all the Devenish runners were well placed with Craig Johnston, Nathan Bell and Nathan Wylie in the lead pack of 20 runners.

The end of the second lap took its toll with a number of runners being forced to withdraw from the race. Our boys dug deep to push on and overtake a few extra runners on the final lap.

Craig battled hard on the final section and just missed out on a 3rd place medal. He was bitterly disappointed, but he clearly had given his all. Nathan Wylie showed great character to finish 13th with Nathan Bell following close behind. Ryan Dunlop’s performance was probably the most improved on the day and he was closely followed by Kyle Ogle and Aaron Somerville.

With the race behind them the boys were satisfied that they had given their best. Cross-country is a team sport and that extra grit and character shown on the last lap deservedly paid off as it was announced that Devenish College had taken 3rd position in the team event. The boys would go home with a medal after all.

This is our first team medal at District level and our first team through to the Ulster finals which take place in Belfast in 22nd February.

The intermediate girls team, consisting of Ashley Dickson, Sophie Long, Nicole Elliott and Diane Johnston, had a tough 3500 metre course to run.

Diane continued the family tradition of good cross-country running, putting in a strong second lap to finish well up the field. With Nicole, Ashley and Sophie just a little further down the field, the girls had done themselves proud.

They battled hard on the day and deserve credit for enjoying the challenge of the course and pushing themselves in an event were many other girls opt out.

All our athletes displayed the best sporting qualities on the day and could only be described as fantastic ambassadors for Devenish College.
