Royal Navy STEM day
The Science department organised a day for Year 11 students when they were treated to an insight into the work involved in the Royal Navy with a focus on the STEM subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
Students were asked to carry out three exercises using a gas turbine and how to make it more efficient; a remote controlled helicopter to provide sufficient food and calories to an aircraft carrier and to compare traditional and modern communication systems. State of the art equipment was provided for the experiments mirroring real life activities.
Royal navy personnel were able to inform and answer questions on possible career options for students. This was a key opportunity for students to relate laboratory and classroom activities to a real life career.
Following this activity some students are keen to investigate further the opportunities within the Royal Navy.
