Euroscola Competition Win
Five Year 13 students, who are studying for the Asdan Level 3 International Award, fought off fierce competition from senior students in other schools across Northern Ireland and the Republic to win the experience of a lifetime of a free 3-day trip to Strasbourg and the European Parliament.
The competition, which was organised through the school’s links with the European Studies Programme, asked pupils to create a leaflet about young volunteers that they know who have made a difference to their school, their community or to the wider world.
Having discussed the format, and researched the leaflet topic in class, the successful Devenish College students decided to provide an entry based on the altruistic endeavours of their very own fellow student, Aoife Elliott 14BM. Agreeing to take part in the competition, Aoife said, “Although I am very involved in working with the community, I never considered myself to be a “volunteer” as such. However, when Mrs McDermott and the Year 13 students asked me to talk to them, I was more than happy to share my experiences in service to others with them”.
The driving force behind the winning competition entry, Hannah Spratt 13OW added, “Our job was easy due to the fact that Aoife is so involved with charity and volunteer activities, therefore, we really didn’t have to add much information!”
The students’ leaflet discusses Aoife’s work with Scripture Union in and out of school, as well as her life-changing visit volunteering at a children’s camp in the Ukraine last year.
The Year 13 students collated the information and entered the competition without any expectations of winning! “We were amazed and delighted that we won!” exclaimed Victoria Johnston 13KH on hearing the news, and Jon Armstrong 13KH agreed that first prize was “unbelievable!”
Preparations for their free educational visit to Strasbourg from 22-24 February 2012 are underway as they get themselves ready to represent Devenish College in the European Parliament during the Euroscola on 23rd February, where they will be joined by Aoife, and to whom they are extremely grateful for her honesty and contribution to their winning entry.
The final word goes to Aoife who enthused “Volunteering is an exciting yet simple part of my life and I encourage everyone to invest more in others. It’s that simple!”
Congratulations once again are due for Hannah Spratt 13OW, Amy Richmond 13OW, Ben Allister 13OW, Victoria Johnston 13KH and Jon Armstrong 13KH. Well done everyone!
