The History Department was literally ‘blown away’ by Year 10 pupils who entered the Battlefields Tour Competition on Wednesday 22 March 2017! Their brief asked them to create, prepare and present something that clearly explained their interest in History and especially WW1, whilst convincing staff why they should be chosen to represent our school on this ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity to travel to the France and Belgium WW1 Battlefields.
Organised by the EA, and available to a selection of schools, travel, accommodation, guides, insurance, visits and meals are all included free of charge for 2 pupils and 1 member of staff from 16-19 May 2017 in conjunction with other post-primary schools from across Northern Ireland.
After 25 pupils registered their interest for going, the History Department devised the challenge of the task in an attempt to discover the true historians among them. Eventually, 13 pupils arrived to present their final creations to Mrs Brunt and Mrs McDermott, but little did they know the difficult task THEY were about to face in having to choose only 2 pupils from this hugely talented bunch!
Creations ranged from cakes worthy of ‘The Great British Bake Off’, paintings, posters, power points, essays, sketches, priceless medals and artifacts to original songs written and performed by pupils themselves. Talent and creativity are truly alive in Devenish College, so check out the video for yourself to prove it!
2 have now been selected and were announced at break time today by Mr Mowbray- congratulations to Amy Henderson and Hillis Fleming 10TB who will now represent Devenish College and accompany Mrs McDermott on the Battlefields Tour to Belgium 16-19 May 2017.
We just want to thank all of the contestants for their outstanding efforts and we are truly sorry we cannot take you all, as you ALL deserve rewards for your hard work. Perhaps Mr Mowbray, as an historian himself, will propose another suitable recompense?
Well done, everyone!
Mrs Brunt, Mrs McDermott and Mr Mowbray!
